Life below water
Life below water
The 2030 Agenda commits to protecting life underwater in all its forms, which is threatened by pollution, plastics and overfishing and illegal fishing.
Specifically, it aims to: reduce pollution; create marine reserves and protected areas where fishing is prohibited; and explore ways to reduce the amount of plastic in the sea, much of which is waste from fishing and industry.
The oceans play a fundamental role in the well-being of humanity and the social and economic development of the planet. The oceans and seas are very important to the planet, covering more than two-thirds of its surface. They produce half the oxygen we breathe and absorb 30% of carbon dioxide emissions, slowing the effect of climate change, although this capacity is now decreasing due to acidification (the presence of chemicals that kill fish and the marine ecosystem).
